| Painting Details: | The diagonal square, or lozenge format suggests to the viewer the formation of imaginary planes off the canvas. The work has four horizontal and three vertical lines but only one fully enclosed plane. The ends of each line are not complete so that planes have up to six sides, giving it a nucleus and relationship with exterior space yet still retaining balance and structure. Red, yellow and blue triangles co-exist within the black and white structure. Mondrian’s technique was based on intuition but carried through with meticulous care. The composition was first drafted with charcoal on paper or canvas. Painted pieces of paper and strips of tape pinned and tacked to the canvas in a complex collage were used until the final composition was achieved. They were then labouriously removed and replaced with non-textural oil paint to complete the work |
